Interview with the Artist
Good day, Mr. Imperfektionist. May I address you by your first name?
Absolutely not.
When was the album created?
From summer to Christmas 2014, at least the recordings. The songs themselves have always existed.
Who does what in Imperfektionist?
Vocals, backing vocals, guitars, bass, drums, synths, piano, special effects, mixing, mastering, hanging around, artwork, distribution, lyrics, stress & composition: me. I hope I didn’t forget anything.
How long is the album?
Eleven tracks, a total of 35 minutes, which is roughly the duration of a bus ride from her to me on good days, including walking distances.
Why exactly eleven songs?
Albums should have an odd number of songs. Otherwise, it brings bad luck.
Does the order of the tracks on the album matter?
Yes! Originally, I wanted the tracks to always play in a random order. Since that’s not technically possible, I arranged them alphabetically.
Which DAW was used?
Exclusively Audacity. The ultra-low budget was the focus and is also part of the style.
What does the album name “She’s Inspiring” mean?
All the tracks were exclusively inspired by female entities, whether it’s a girlfriend, an old flame, a potted plant, or a subway announcer’s voice. Also, it’s a line from “Burning for the Host Tonight.”
Why is the album rated for 18 and older?
Someone found the carefully placed F-word.
Can you reveal what “ATCV” stands for?
“Artificial Train Conductor Voice,” I’m pretty sure.
The drums don’t always sound the same. Why is that?
Two and a half different drum sets were used. For the vocals, a total of eleven different sound effects were used. Also, no single synth appears in two songs.
How did you begin?
With the chorus of “Lena” (written) and “Valentine” (recorded).
Is Lena your girlfriend?
Which Lena?
Who is “Valentine” about?
It’s about fishermen on the street, wanderers in boats, boring wine, worthless gold, a world without Earth, every day except February 14th, and about girls who think they’re too good for me.
Speaking of girls, how do those sung about react?
For 42.8 %, it led to something more.
The artist’s favorite song on the album?
Easy: the cover version of “My Heart Will Go On.”
The artist’s favorite details?
The bubble gum synth in the verse of “Heart’s Still Beating,” the wandering reverb in the intro of “Ugly Plant,” and the second guitar in “Drawback of My Lucky Love.”
The artist’s favorite line in the lyrics?
“Computer generated love is complicated” (ATCV). I entrust that to everyone who has a heart.
What’s still “imperfect” about the album at this point?
Fans don’t like the font on the cover, so we should work on that. Also, it would be nice if a musical fringe group emerged that listens to this music genre.
What’s the genre of the album, anyway?
Melpop. Melancholic melodic mellow pop.
So, pop?
Sure, pop. Mozart and the Beatles were pop too, and they were well-received.
Other artists that interest you?
Ozric Tentacles, Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Dying Fetus, Nine Inch Nails, Trust, and too many more. Their influence on the album is limited, though.
Are you satisfied with your fans?
Between us, not yet. Drums sound too artificial to one person, guitars don’t rock enough for another. One doesn’t like my voice, another finds the synths too cheesy. There’s been a lot of negative feedback. People think artists can work with it, but they’re wrong. We just want to hear what we already think of ourselves.
It seems you had issues with clipping during recording and mixing?
Clipping? What’s that supposed to be?
The overall sound is fat but muddy. What could be done about it?
Cut out the bass, boost the highs. And, especially, don’t listen on a good sound system.
Will there be a tour for the album?
Yes, but for now, it will be solo-acoustic. We’re still looking for live musicians who are talented, have no opinions of their own, and are willing to work on a volunteer basis. Free beer might be negotiable.
Is the next album already in the works?
Of course. It will be titled “She’s Expiring” and will revolve around the transience of things. Life, love, art… only transience itself is everlasting.
Is there anything you’d like to say in conclusion?
Yes! Well… [pauses]… no. System of a Down already said that, unfortunately.
